Renée Vivien

1877–1909

Renée Vivien (Pauline Mary Tarn, 1877–1909) was a British-born poet who wrote in French. Born in London and raised partly in Paris, she settled there and became a central figure of the literary circle around Natalie Clifford Barney.

Her collections, beginning with Études et préludes (1901), are among the first to celebrate love between women openly, in refined Symbolist verse influenced by Baudelaire and by Sappho, whom she translated. Called “the Muse of the Violets”, she died in Paris at 32.
