Théodore de Banville

Théodore de Banville

1823–1891

Théodore de Banville (1823–1891) was a French poet and writer from Moulins, a friend of Baudelaire and Gautier and a forerunner of the Parnassian movement. He was a virtuoso of rhyme and of old French fixed forms such as the ballade and the rondeau, which he helped revive.

His books include Les Cariatides (1842), Les Stalactites (1846) and the playful Odes funambulesques (1857); his Petit Traité de poésie française (1872) was widely read. The young Rimbaud sent him his early poems.
