Maurice Rollinat

Maurice Rollinat

1846–1903

Maurice Rollinat (1846–1903) was a French poet and musician from Châteauroux. A protégé of George Sand, a friend of his family, he became famous in the Paris cabarets of the 1880s, especially the Chat Noir, where he sang his poems at the piano.

His collection Les Névroses (1883), full of morbid and macabre imagery in the spirit of Baudelaire and Poe, caused a sensation. He later withdrew to the countryside of the Creuse valley, where nature became his main subject in books such as L’Abîme and Paysages et paysans.
