1842–1908

François Coppée (1842–1908) was a French poet, playwright and novelist from Paris. Associated with the Parnassians, he became hugely popular as “the poet of the humble”, writing with sympathy and simplicity about the everyday lives of ordinary Parisians.

His collections include Le Reliquaire (1866), Les Intimités and Les Humbles (1872); his short verse play Le Passant (1869) made Sarah Bernhardt famous. He was elected to the Académie française in 1884.
