Louis Fréchette

1839–1908

Louis Fréchette (1839–1908) was a French-Canadian poet, playwright and journalist from Lévis, Quebec, and a Liberal member of the Canadian Parliament. In 1880 his collection Les Fleurs boréales won a prize from the Académie française, the first such honour for a Canadian writer.

His epic La Légende d’un peuple (1887), inspired by Victor Hugo, tells the history of French Canada in verse. His prose tales, such as the Contes de Jos Violon, preserve the oral storytelling of rural Quebec.
