Alphonse de Lamartine

Alphonse de Lamartine

1790–1869

Alphonse de Lamartine (1790–1869) was a French poet, writer and statesman from Mâcon, one of the founders of French Romanticism. His Méditations poétiques (1820), and especially “Le Lac” (“Ô temps, suspends ton vol!”), written after the death of the woman he loved, brought a new personal lyricism into French poetry.

He later turned to politics: in 1848 he was briefly foreign minister and the leading figure of the provisional government of the Second Republic. His other works include Jocelyn, La Chute d’un ange and the Histoire des Girondins.
