Albert Samain

Albert Samain

1858–1900

Albert Samain (1858–1900) was a French Symbolist poet from Lille. He worked as a clerk in Paris and helped found the review Mercure de France.

His first collection, Au jardin de l’Infante (1893), made him famous; its languid, musical poems, full of twilight, gardens and faded elegance, were much admired. It was followed by Aux flancs du vase (1898) and the posthumous Le Chariot d’or (1901). He died of tuberculosis at 42.
