José-Maria de Heredia

1842–1905

José-Maria de Heredia (1842–1905) was a French poet born in Cuba, one of the masters of the Parnassian movement. He moved to France as a young man, studied at the École des chartes and became a close disciple of Leconte de Lisle.

His single collection, Les Trophées (1893), is made up mainly of 118 sonnets that evoke history from ancient Greece and Rome to the conquistadors (“Les Conquérants”). Their perfect form made him famous, and he was elected to the Académie française in 1894.
