Georges Rodenbach

Georges Rodenbach

1855–1898

Georges Rodenbach (1855–1898) was a Belgian poet and novelist who wrote in French, a Symbolist born in Tournai and raised in Ghent. He moved to Paris in 1887 and became known in literary circles there.

His novel Bruges-la-Morte (1892), one of the first novels illustrated with photographs, made the silent canals of Bruges a symbol of mourning and memory. His poetry, in collections such as Le Règne du silence (1891) and Le Miroir du ciel natal, is quiet and melancholy, full of still waters, grey skies and closed rooms.
