Francis Jammes

Francis Jammes

1868–1938

Francis Jammes (1868–1938) was a French poet and novelist from Tournay in the Pyrenees, who lived most of his life in the Béarn and the Basque country. He broke with Symbolist sophistication to write simply and tenderly about country life, animals and everyday things.

His collections include De l’angélus de l’aube à l’angélus du soir (1898) and Le Deuil des primevères (1901), with the well-known “Prière pour aller au paradis avec les ânes”. After returning to Catholicism in 1905 he wrote increasingly religious verse, such as Les Géorgiques chrétiennes.
