Arthur Rimbaud

Arthur Rimbaud

1854–1891

Arthur Rimbaud (1854–1891) was a French poet from Charleville in the Ardennes. He wrote all his poetry between the ages of about fifteen and twenty, and his stormy relationship with Paul Verlaine became one of the most famous episodes in literary history.

Poems such as “Le Dormeur du val”, “Ma Bohème”, “Voyelles” and “Le Bateau ivre”, and the prose works Une saison en enfer (1873) and Illuminations, influenced Symbolism, Surrealism and modern poetry as a whole. He then abandoned literature, worked as a trader in Africa, and died in Marseille at 37.
