Rubén Darío

Rubén Darío

1867–1916

Rubén Darío (1867–1916) was a Nicaraguan poet, journalist and diplomat, the founder of modernismo, the first Spanish-language literary movement to influence Spain from the Americas. He lived in Chile, Argentina, Spain and France.

Azul… (1888) and Prosas profanas (1896) renewed the music and imagery of Spanish verse, and Cantos de vida y esperanza (1905) added depth and political concern. “Canción de otoño en primavera” (“Juventud, divino tesoro”), “Sonatina”, “Lo fatal” and “A Roosevelt” are among his most famous poems.
