Ramón López Velarde

Ramón López Velarde

1888–1921

Ramón López Velarde (1888–1921) was a Mexican poet from Jerez, Zacatecas, regarded as one of the founders of modern Mexican poetry. He studied law and worked in Mexico City as a journalist and teacher.

His collections La sangre devota (1916) and Zozobra (1919) combine provincial Catholic sensibility with sensuality and irony. His long poem “La suave Patria” (1921), an affectionate portrait of Mexico, became a national classic. He died in Mexico City at 33.
