Alfonsina Storni

Alfonsina Storni

1892–1938

Alfonsina Storni (1892–1938) was an Argentine poet born in Switzerland and raised in Argentina, one of the most important voices of Latin American modernism. She worked as a teacher and journalist in Buenos Aires and wrote boldly about women’s lives, love and independence.

Her collections include La inquietud del rosal (1916), Irremediablemente (1919), Languidez (1920) and Ocre (1925). “Tú me quieres blanca”, “Peso ancestral” and “Hombre pequeñito” are among her best-known poems. Ill with cancer, she took her life in Mar del Plata in 1938; her farewell poem “Voy a dormir” is often read alongside the song “Alfonsina y el mar”.
