Antonio Machado

1875–1939

Antonio Machado (1875–1939) was a Spanish poet from Seville, a leading member of the Generation of ’98. He taught French in Soria, Baeza and Segovia, and the Castilian landscape is at the heart of his best-known book, Campos de Castilla (1912).

His poetry is simple, meditative and deeply felt, concerned with time, memory and Spain. The lines “Caminante, no hay camino, / se hace camino al andar” are among the most quoted in Spanish. A supporter of the Republic, he crossed into France at the end of the Civil War and died in Collioure in 1939.
