Rosalía de Castro

Rosalía de Castro

1837–1885

Rosalía de Castro (1837–1885) was a Galician poet and novelist from Santiago de Compostela, a central figure of the Rexurdimento, the nineteenth-century revival of Galician literature. Her Cantares gallegos (1863), published on 17 May, is commemorated each year as the Day of Galician Letters.

Her Galician book Follas novas (1880) and her Spanish collection En las orillas del Sar (1884) speak of loss, emigration, solitude and longing (saudade), and she is considered a forerunner of modern Spanish poetry.
