César Vallejo

César Vallejo

1892–1938

César Vallejo (1892–1938) was a Peruvian poet from Santiago de Chuco in the Andes, one of the great innovators of twentieth-century poetry in Spanish. After working as a teacher in Trujillo and spending time in prison, he left Peru in 1923 and lived the rest of his life in Paris.

Los heraldos negros (1919) and the radically experimental Trilce (1922) were published in Peru; his later poems, collected after his death as Poemas humanos and España, aparta de mí este cáliz, respond to suffering and to the Spanish Civil War.
