Salvador Díaz Mirón

1853–1928

Salvador Díaz Mirón (1853–1928) was a Mexican poet and politician from Veracruz, an important forerunner of modernismo. A fiery journalist and congressman, he was known for his violent temper and fought several duels; he was imprisoned for killing a man in 1892.

His early Romantic poems, such as “A Gloria”, were widely recited throughout Latin America. His later collection Lascas (1901) shows a strict, polished style, and “El fantasma” and “Ejemplo” are among his best-known poems.
