Émile Nelligan

1879–1941

Émile Nelligan (1879–1941) was a French-Canadian poet from Montreal and one of the most celebrated poets of Quebec. Influenced by Baudelaire, Verlaine and Rimbaud, he wrote all of his work as a teenager and young man, reading his poems at the École littéraire de Montréal.

In 1899, at nineteen, he suffered a mental breakdown and spent the rest of his life in psychiatric institutions. His poems, collected by his friend Louis Dantin in 1904, include “Le Vaisseau d’or”, “Soir d’hiver” (“Ah! comme la neige a neigé!”) and “La Romance du vin”.
