Tristan Corbière

Tristan Corbière

1845–1875

Tristan Corbière (Édouard-Joachim Corbière, 1845–1875) was a French poet from Morlaix in Brittany, the son of a sea captain and novelist. Chronically ill, he spent much of his short life at Roscoff by the sea.

His only book, Les Amours jaunes (1873), went almost unnoticed until Verlaine included him among his Poètes maudits (1883). Its rough, ironic and self-mocking poems about love, the sea and Brittany, such as “La Rapsode foraine et le Pardon de Sainte-Anne”, influenced Laforgue and T. S. Eliot.
