François de Malherbe

François de Malherbe

1555–1628

François de Malherbe (1555–1628) was a French poet and critic from Caen, court poet to Henri IV and Louis XIII. He set out to purify the French language and poetry of what he saw as the excesses of the Pléiade, insisting on clarity, regularity and strict rules of versification.

His best-known poem, the “Consolation à M. du Périer” on the death of his friend’s daughter, contains the famous lines “Et rose elle a vécu ce que vivent les roses, / L’espace d’un matin”. Boileau’s praise, “Enfin Malherbe vint”, made him the father of French classicism.
