Louise Labé

1525–1566

Louise Labé (c. 1524–1566) was a French poet of the Renaissance from Lyon, the daughter and wife of rope-makers, known as “La Belle Cordière”. She was well educated, and according to legend she rode in a tournament dressed as a knight.

Her Œuvres (1555) contain three elegies, the prose Débat de Folie et d’Amour and twenty-four sonnets of passionate love, among them “Je vis, je meurs: je me brûle et me noie” and “Baise m’encor, rebaise-moi et baise”. Rilke translated her sonnets into German.
