Philippe Desportes

1546–1606

Philippe Desportes (1546–1606) was a French poet from Chartres, the favourite court poet of Henri III. His elegant love poetry, in the manner of Petrarch and the Italian poets, was enormously popular and made him rich.

His Premières Œuvres (1573) include sonnets, elegies and songs such as “Rosette, pour un peu d’absence”. In later life he translated the Psalms into French verse. Malherbe’s sharp criticism of his work marked the move toward French classicism.
