André Chénier

1762–1794

André Chénier (1762–1794) was a French poet born in Constantinople to a French father and a Greek mother. Steeped in Greek poetry, he wrote elegies, idylls and odes that combined classical forms with a new sensibility.

Initially a supporter of the Revolution, he opposed the Terror and was guillotined in Paris two days before the fall of Robespierre. Almost none of his poetry was published in his lifetime; the 1819 edition, including “La Jeune Captive” and “La Jeune Tarentine”, made him a hero of the Romantics.
