Silvio Pellico

1789–1854

Silvio Pellico (1789–1854) was an Italian writer and patriot from Saluzzo in Piedmont. His tragedy Francesca da Rimini (1815) brought him early fame in Milan, where he edited the liberal review Il Conciliatore.

Arrested in 1820 for his links with the Carbonari, he spent ten years in Austrian prisons, mostly in the Spielberg fortress at Brno. His memoir of those years, Le mie prigioni (1832), was read all over Europe and did much for the cause of Italian independence.
