Charles Cros

Charles Cros

1842–1888

Charles Cros (1842–1888) was a French poet and inventor from Fabrezan in the Aude. In 1877 he described a method for recording and reproducing sound, the “paléophone”, months before Edison’s phonograph, and he also devised an early process for colour photography.

A friend of Verlaine and Rimbaud and a regular of Parisian bohemian circles, he published the collections Le Coffret de santal (1873) and Le Collier de griffes (1908). His humorous monologue “Le Hareng saur” is still popular; the Académie Charles-Cros, which awards recording prizes, is named after him.
