Pierre de Ronsard

1524–1585

Pierre de Ronsard (1524–1585) was a French poet, the leading figure of the Pléiade and known in his day as the “prince of poets”. Deafness ended his early career at court, and he devoted himself to studying Greek and Latin poetry.

His Odes and Amours renewed French lyric poetry. “Mignonne, allons voir si la rose” and the Sonnets pour Hélène, with “Quand vous serez bien vieille, au soir, à la chandelle”, are among the most famous French poems. He was the favourite poet of Charles IX.
