Joachim du Bellay

1522–1560

Joachim du Bellay (c. 1522–1560) was a French poet and a founder, with Pierre de Ronsard, of the group known as the Pléiade. His manifesto Défense et illustration de la langue française (1549) argued that French could rival Latin and Greek as a language of poetry.

During four years in Rome he wrote Les Antiquités de Rome and Les Regrets (1558), sonnets of homesickness and satire; “Heureux qui, comme Ulysse, a fait un beau voyage” is one of the best-known poems in French. His sonnet sequence L’Olive was the first in French.
