Amado Nervo

Amado Nervo

1870–1919

Amado Nervo (1870–1919) was a Mexican poet, journalist and diplomat from Tepic, Nayarit, one of the leading figures of Latin American modernismo. He studied for the priesthood before turning to writing, and later served as a diplomat in Madrid, Buenos Aires and Montevideo, where he died.

His poetry moved from Modernist elegance to a mystical simplicity. La amada inmóvil, written after the death of his companion Ana Cecilia Dailliez, and Serenidad and Elevación were very popular; “En paz” (“Vida, nada me debes; vida, estamos en paz”) is his best-known poem.
