Vicente Huidobro
1893–1948
Vicente Huidobro (1893–1948) was a Chilean poet from Santiago and the founder of creacionismo, which held that the poet should create new realities rather than imitate nature (“El poeta es un pequeño Dios”). He lived for long periods in Paris and Madrid, where he worked with the avant-garde and influenced Spanish Ultraism.
His major work is Altazor (1931), a long poem of a parachutist’s fall in which language gradually breaks down into pure sound. He also wrote Poemas árticos and Ecuatorial, both published in 1918.
