Paul Valéry

Paul Valéry

1871–1945

Paul Valéry (1871–1945) was a French poet, essayist and philosopher from Sète. After early poems in the Symbolist manner of his master Mallarmé, he gave up poetry for some twenty years to devote himself to thought and to his famous notebooks.

He returned with La Jeune Parque (1917) and the collection Charmes (1922), which contains “Le Cimetière marin” (“Le vent se lève!… il faut tenter de vivre!”). Elected to the Académie française in 1925, he was given a state funeral and is buried in the seaside cemetery at Sète.
