Emily Dickinson

Emily Dickinson

1830–1886

Emily Dickinson (1830–1886) was an American poet who spent nearly all her life in Amherst, Massachusetts. She wrote almost 1,800 poems, but fewer than a dozen were published in her lifetime, mostly anonymously and heavily edited. After her death her sister Lavinia found the manuscripts, and selections began to appear from 1890.

Her short lyrics use slant rhyme, dashes and unconventional capitals to explore death, immortality, nature, faith and the inner life. Poems such as “Because I could not stop for Death”, “Hope is the thing with feathers” and “I’m Nobody! Who are you?” made her one of the most original voices in American poetry.
