William Dean Howells (* 1. März 1837 in Martinsville (heute Martins Ferry), Ohio; † 11. Mai 1920 in Neu England) war ein US-amerikanischer Schriftsteller, Literaturkritiker und Zeitschriftenredakteur. Seine bekanntesten Werke sind A Modern Instance (1881) und The Rise of Silas Lapham (1885).
