Nicolas Boileau

Nicolas Boileau

1636–1711

Nicolas Boileau (1636–1711) was a French poet and critic from Paris, the great theorist of French classicism and royal historiographer to Louis XIV. A friend of Racine, Molière and La Fontaine, he championed reason, clarity and the imitation of the ancients.

His Satires and Épîtres mock the literary fashions of his day; his L’Art poétique (1674) sets out the rules of classical poetry (“Ce que l’on conçoit bien s’énonce clairement”). His mock-epic Le Lutrin is also admired.
