Luis de Camões

Luis de Camões

1524–1580

Luís de Camões (c. 1524–1580) was a Portuguese poet, regarded as the greatest writer in the Portuguese language. He served as a soldier, losing an eye in North Africa, and spent seventeen years in Asia, in Goa and Macau; according to tradition he saved the manuscript of his epic from a shipwreck off the Mekong.

His epic Os Lusíadas (1572) celebrates Vasco da Gama’s voyage to India and the history of Portugal. His sonnets and lyrics, such as “Amor é fogo que arde sem se ver”, are among the finest love poems of the Renaissance. Portugal’s national day, 10 June, marks the date of his death.
