Gérard de Nerval

Gérard de Nerval

1808–1855

Gérard de Nerval (Gérard Labrunie, 1808–1855) was a French poet, writer and translator from Paris. At nineteen he published a celebrated translation of Goethe’s Faust. He travelled to the Orient and wrote about it in Voyage en Orient.

Repeated bouts of mental illness shaped his late masterpieces: the stories of Les Filles du feu (1854), including “Sylvie”, the dream narrative Aurélia, and the twelve hermetic sonnets of Les Chimères, with “El Desdichado” (“Je suis le Ténébreux, — le Veuf, — l’Inconsolé”). He was found hanged in Paris in 1855.
