Christine de Pisan

1363–1430

Christine de Pizan (c. 1364 – c. 1430) was an Italian-born French writer at the court of Charles VI. Widowed at twenty-five with three children to support, she became one of the first women in Europe to earn her living by writing.

She wrote love ballads and lyric poems, works of history and politics, and Le Livre de la Cité des Dames (1405), a defence of women. Her last work, Le Ditié de Jehanne d’Arc (1429), is the only poem about Joan of Arc written during her lifetime.
