Jules Laforgue

Jules Laforgue

1860–1887

Jules Laforgue (1860–1887) was a French poet born in Montevideo, Uruguay, who moved to France as a child. He worked for five years in Berlin as French reader to the Empress Augusta.

His ironic, melancholy collections Les Complaintes (1885) and L’Imitation de Notre-Dame la Lune (1886), and his experiments with free verse, made him one of the most influential Symbolist poets; T. S. Eliot and Ezra Pound acknowledged a strong debt to him. He died of tuberculosis in Paris at 27.
