Alfred de Musset

Alfred de Musset

1810–1857

Alfred de Musset (1810–1857) was a French poet, playwright and novelist from Paris, one of the leading Romantics. His tempestuous love affair with George Sand inspired some of his best work, including the novel La Confession d’un enfant du siècle (1836).

His four Nuits (1835–37), dialogues between the poet and his Muse, are masterpieces of Romantic lyric poetry, as are “Souvenir” and “Tristesse”. His plays, such as Lorenzaccio and On ne badine pas avec l’amour, are still performed today. He was elected to the Académie française in 1852.
